oh god I think my ears just came.

I'm sitting alone in an office at work (because much noisy video editing is going on in the usual room). I decided to use Pandora for some music... and plugged in the Sennheiser HD 465 headphones that were lying around.

I've been listening to music through the shitty speakers of my laptop ever since the hurricane. I've forgotten what bass is like. I could just close my eyes and sink into the low frequencies with a smile on my face and get nothing done all day if I'm not careful...

The little black spider on my left shoulder is telling me to just shove these in my purse on the way home. And my ears are agreeing with her...

Grado SR-60s. Second pair (managed to destroy first pair myself by breaking the cord, a miracle, 'cause they're really durable) but worth even the second $70 purchase. Brought over the foam ear-pads from the first set just so I wouldn't have to break a second set in. Going on six years or so with these, and seriously, I can pick out any frequency range I care to imagine and think, "Damn, that's coming through just fine."

If these die, I'm gonna go right back and buy a third set. I've started considering closed-ear ones, though, so it'll actually be a difficult choice, but there are so many advantages to open-ear....

I like those for open-air phones... but I prefer my Sony V6's for closed ear... to blot out the outside world and just revel in the impact.

Hmmmm, the Sennheisers are NOT that expensive...

I should find something to replace my worn-out Sony MDR-V600 headphones, though the half-decent Altec Lansing speakers attached to my desktop computer make that less than pressing. My laptop has fairly bad sound quality from its speakers, but it also gets a lot of interference noise on the headphone jack from various internal components so it's almost pointless.

I used to work at Adray's, an electronic store in L.A., back in '88.
One day, while cleaning out the room containing all the open demo boxes, I stumbled across a pair of Sony Boodo Khan headphones.
They were still in the box, all by themselves. The Boodo Khan Walkman itself was long gone.
The BK Walkman was a super high-end unit selling for $200 at the time.
I talked my manager into letting me have the headphones and boy howdy, the bass response on those was UNsane!
I liked 'em so much that I contacted Sony a few years later, when I had some disposable income, and bought the last 2 pairs they had in the warehouse.
Unfortunately, the Boodos were cheaply-made and just about impossible to fix. My last pair died in '05.
I use a pair of Sony MDR-V600s these days.
I like the cushiony ear-trapping design.
Open-air headphones broadcast the music all around you and annoy anyone in the same room.
Right now, my co-worker is wearing open-air headphones and I swear to Fanged God he's listening to bagpipes!

I got my MDR-V600s as open-box stock at Best Buy, but the temple tips on my glasses poked holes in the thin material on the pads and all of it eventually peeled off. (I also bent the plug somehow.)

That crap just peels right off, it's annoying.
That crap is almost completely peeled off the right-side earcup.
The stuff is still on the left ear-cup. It's wrinkled but unbroken so far.
I've had these headphones since Naughty Dog (Summer '05).

It happens (taking much of the bass with it...) but you can buy new pads for them and make them like new again ;^} I think one of my sets are on their third replacement.

You can get the original replacements for cheap...

Or upgrade to the new soft pads!

These phones and their pro cousin the MDR-7506 are kind of standard in the professional audio world, and I highly recommend them as a 'permanent' set of good listening devices.

... This is amusing. I had this experince. Almost to the letter, including the brand and model of headphones, except it was with a copy of Squarepusher's Ultravisitor.

I, um. I've got these 30-something year old phones. I'm sure they objectively sound like crap, but they are a vast improvement over my last every single pair. Plus they look amazing! If these ever kick it I'll try and justify purchasing some of those.

I was totally caught by surprise on that one. The night after I figured out I needed to yawn and push to get the in-ear plugs to sit right, I was listening to Pandora (Daft Punk's Aerodynamic flipped up) while doing late-nite HW... Total show stopper.

I got my first pair of in-ears (Senn CX300W's) a month or so back, The reproduction is really nice, but I find walking around with something that deadens external noise that much kind of scary.
