Funeral's done. No drama about the gender stuff there, thankfully.

The longest part was the Catholic Mass. Damn but religion takes a while to happen. I kept on being faintly paranoid that there would be censure for me being right at the front and not participating beyond standing and sitting when everyone else did; I'm not any flavor of Christian. Stand up, sit down. Stand up, sit down. Repeat the programmed phases. For a while I started kinda dissecting it from a NLP perspective, but it just kept on going.

Mina is in the ground and I managed to get through an experience that feels designed to try and make you miserable while still being pretty perky. Hooray!

We got donuts on the way back. And then I opened up my email to find someone saying that my Tarot deck looks like "something Shag / Foglio would draw after a night out drinking with Alan Moore", which made me laugh and smile. I can get back to them soon, too!

Oh yes.. I recently went to one when my moms-partners-dad died earlier this year.. Apparently he got the 'high mass'. Three priests, communion, and a lot of sore knees.

No matter the mixed feelings, the ceremonies in religion can be just pretty fascinating..

I think the construction you had to make in first paragraph kinda broke your grammar generator for the rest of the reply! I managed to parse it anyway.

Indeed, the construction of that post looked like something I would write. :)

I made a change to the sentance without really paying attention to what it would do the structure. Sigh :) *embarassed*

When my aunt passed away of cancer last year, I ended up in mass for the first time in 20 years. It was impossible for me to listen to it without being PO'd at the crock of shit the whole thing was. They say funerals are for the living, but what message do the living get?

No matter how good a person you are, you're likely to be forced to suffer through a long, debilitating illness and die painfully in a hospice bed with tubes stuck all over your body. This is because God (if it exists) is a right royal bastard. But hey, at least we tell you that you get an afterlife that nobody has any proof exists simply to keep you from pondering oblivion too much and realizing that 99% of you have done nothing in your life that will last one week past your death.

There was an article in Rolling Stone recently about the sort of psycholinguistics of Christianity. I haven't read it through too much yet but was going to see whether it was worth linking to...

I've been to several flavors of Protestant services (including ones with communion and ones in a tent (and the people dressed casually (and I got to wear my leather hat))) but never Catholic, naturally. I think my family are allergic to Catholics. :)

I'm a little curious myself, but I can never sit through an entire service comfortably. Even if I try to enjoy it as a sociologist I end up squirming in my seat by the halfway point just wishing it would end. I hear from friends that in primarily African American churches the services can go on for hours... I would die!
