A hint of my working methods. Maybe.

Original sketch:

About 80% done:

Outline view of same:

Two global color swatches mean I could make this whatever color scheme I want. No transparancy or color blends; the shading you see is all hatching, done mostly with dashed lines.

Thirteen layers; the one for the person in the doorway expands into six sub-layers. I <3 layers a whole lot. This is probably done in terms of layers unless I add more tentacles.

Speaking of which, a closeup on the doorway:

There's always some part of my images that concentrates more detail than the rest, and this is it in this one. Dotted lines, swirly blends; the spines on the head (headdress?) are art brushes. The swirlies over the door are mirrored with the appearance palette, not by cutting and pasting - group, add a new stroke to the group in the appearance palette, transform it with move and reflect X.

I can't decide if the upper left needs a few more cryptic tentacular limbs or not. Also, the stripes on the back of the huge tentacle will probably vanish; I need something to contrast the suction cups that will be on its back, but those stripes aren't it.

I might suggest some... hazy transparent tentacles for the upper left. Sort of an image overlay type of thing, but I'm a sucker for multilayered images. e_e

Also, maybe some... dapply sorts of shapes for the big tentacle? The one with the stripes... which aren't nearly organic-looking enough for a tentacle, I think.

Thank you so much for sharing your process -- I always get new ways to improve my own Illustrator work when I read your journal, stuff that never occurred to me and are much easier and elegant solutions.
Besides, tentacles are just plain cool...

I like the big 'sucker bumps' that you had on the back of the big tent in the sketch.. it seemed to give it more sense of depth. The current one looks a bit two dimensional, more of a silhouette than a three dimensional form in space. Though that may be what you're aiming for anyhoo... <:) Gods.. I have so much to learn yet about Illustrator!! *angsts!!!!* ;)

It's not done yet; the suction cups are one of the few things left to do.
