art theft

I'm thinking about style borrowing, originality, and the accusations of 'art theft' that are so common in amateur furry art circles (probably other amateur art circles, too, but animal-head people is the only one I participate in).

Maybe I should make a little 'art theft' page on my website. Not to publicly humiliate people who I feel have ripped me off - as far as I know, nobody ever has - but rather to show who I'm ripping off every time I put pencil to paper. There haven't been any tracings or direct swipes (aside from blatantly obvious parody), but it might be interesting to really show my influences, rather than just mention the names now and then.

The first things that come to mind are rip-offs/tributes to Frank Miller, Bruce Timm, and Mike Mignola, am I right? It takes me very little effort to do psuedo Miller/Timm stuff, though I don't know why that is.

Actually, I think that's a great idea! really interesting! I think something like that might be fun to try, too! Keep us posted!

well, aside from the fact that you can't steal it.. or even borrow it..

annnnd at worst, you're mindlessly copying, at best you're
learning to see things differently through the aesthetic filter
of another artist.

but in neither case is the original artist deprived of
anything whatsoever aside from sole notoriety - and is that
really what's valuable about the whole exercise?

i'd be interested to see these pieces, sure; anything to further
elaborate my concept of "Peggy" beyond the current mystery

O_O

Hoka hey,

Went to see said theft page, eyyyawn. Seeing fandom artists whine about art theft is like watching caught dead to rights inmates cry about the criminal justice system. Waaah i got ripped!

duly noted, yer pal,
Phil.

It would be cool if you could do a new picture in the style of another artist. Isn't that commonly accepted as a tribute, as long as you state what you're doing?

If it makes you feel special, I've tried to rip you off before...
:D

All I learned from that experience is that I suck at Illustrator and I could never make something this cool:
