I have this desire to listen to something that is kind of musique concrete but is also perky and upbeat - most music built around non-musical samples is kinda dark and brooding. I'm also not looking for aggressive turntablism; I enjoy that a lot but it's not the mood I want. I'm kinda hoping for "whimsical" rather than "danceable" or "foreboding".

It doesn't need to be entirely non-musical; I just want to have some strong concrete elements in something happy.

Any suggestions?

The Real Tuesday Weld, "Terminally Ambivalent Over You." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgOQuLKeX7g)

Pretty much all of his stuff falls on the whimsical side.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm... Try http://www.discogs.com/London-Sinfonietta-Warp-Works-Twentieth-Century-Masters/release/794967

You can get it from Bleep.com, also listen to it there. (You need to bump the playback every 30 sec but it'll give you an idea if you wanna get it.)

You may already have this gal, I know yr into the good shit. Best I could think of.

May I suggest Royksopp's debut album, Melody AM? It isn't very non-musical, but it is rather pseudo-glitcy. The first two tracks are rather wonderful, and "Eple" in particular might hit the spot.

Apologies if you're already tuned into them!

Second the slightly off-topic recommendation of Röyksopp. Love those guys.

The album Strange Cargo* by David Van Tieghem (Private Music label) has lots of interesting clankety-plinkety sounds. It's not super perky, but it's not dark either, just neutral and awake with varying low levels of funky. Here, I'll copy Van Tieghem's instrument credits from the liner notes:

Akai S900, Simmons Silicon mallet, Emulator II, Emax & EIII, Yamaha DX7, DX7II & TX802, Fairlight CMI IIx & Series III, Korg M1, Prophet VS, processed shortwave radio and television signals, Musser rosewood marimba, flour sifter, Thai wooden cowbells, Ludwig stainless steel drums, paper bag, wooden tongue drum, Remo tom-toms, woodblocks, Zildjian cymbals, plastic milk bottle, ceramic drums, Alessis HR-16, assorted scrap metal, large Chinese drum, small wine bottle, metal ashtrays, aftershave bottle, plastic sticks, Guatemalan cowbell, waterphone, corrugated plastic hose, empty coffee can, Synclavier, amplified tennis racket, cocktail shaker, finger snaps, Chinese cymbals & gongs, toy plastic hammer, Brazilian shaker, Suzuki musical spring, Roland D-50, Digital Piano, Super JX, Super Jupiter, Vocoder, Voice Processor, TR-808 & TR-626, voice

*Not Strange Cargo by William Orbit. That's really good too, but it's not what you're asking for.
