You folks have a lot to say about Magic. I was not expecting all that just from my going "wtf?" at the bad packaging as someone coming to it cold.
Now that I've skimmed the Complete And Total Rules, I think that if I do start playing Magic with any frequency I'm gonna insist on playing the "ante" variant. The "deal a random card from the deck you're using, put it aside, winner gets it" variant. Because I suspect that this will make most "serious" players refuse to play with me. Which seems like a damn fine idea if you just wanna have some fun.
More likely, though, I suspect it'll just sit on the bookshelf (wrapped up in a hairband along with the "manuals") for a couple years, forgotten, while we keep playing Race for the Galaxy on a regular basis.
(If you like the rules interaction of M:TG but hate the metagame embedded in the real-world economy, you might like RftG. A lot. We've got the base game and both expansions, and we've really gotten our money's worth.)
