You know, I hear that sometime in the eighties they retconned Galactus so that he's actually just some giant cloud of Eat, who creates psychic fear vibrations or something that makes people THINK they're seeing a big nasty giant whatever-they-are. Fuck that. I like the insane megalomania of him being a GIANT SPACESHIP MAN WHO EATS PLANETS.

Also, I really think that in the long run I want to do these with no border, if I can manage it; full-bleed images just feel like more of a kick in the face, and that's what a good Tarot deck is supposed to deliver. Until then, though, Mz. Galactus here will be the only one to break out of her frame. She's too BIG not to.

Ultimate was a bunch of short-term complete reimaginings of the basic ideas, right?

The Ultimate universe seems fairly persistent, as they're not so much a simple reimagining as a well-intentioned refactoring, distilling decades of storytelling cruft into something far more coherent and interconnected. They're for the most part quite good, if divergent from the standard Marvel universe. Still, Galactus has always been and will always be GIANT SPACE MAN to me. :)

You know, that sort of 'giant cloud of dissassemblers (dissemblers?) shows up in the second movie version of the Fantastic Four too. It explains a lot that he was retconned at some point, thus the change in the movie version...though that doesn't excuse the godawful horrid movie itself. Yes, I did my half-attention to the movie once, though not in theaters, thankfully.

Of course, my favorite all-devouring cloud is made of the arms of Mantrid, from Lexx.

I'm glad I was right in spotting Galactus in the sketch. I feel all smart! I didn't know that they'd try to change him that much. Shame, really. He was just fine all on his own, though I DID like the part he played in "Earth X." There, he was still his big ol' self but he had a slightly different purpose. Read it if you haven't. One of the best super-hero all inclusive GNs I've read. This is a cool piece, and I like the idea of the cards being borderless. It fits your style of linelessness as well.

I had always wondered about the character Galactus but I was never really into comic books, so I looked it up on Wikipedia last year. Apparently he looks like whatever he wants, really; he can change his size at will and appears to be a giant of the same race as the observer. So a human would see a giant human, and a kilraithi would see a giant kilraithi and a norn would see a giant norn and so on...

Apparently his true power is omnipresent and omnecient, however it's being constantly drained by containing a force of absolute destruction, making him mortal but godlike. He eats planets in order to stop the whole universe from dying.

As for his origin, apparently he was the last surviving mortal from the previous universe, and he just happened to be at the spot where everything imploded, and the previous universe's manifestation of life carried him into the new universe where he became a god. I think his name in the previous universe was Stanley or Galen or something... XD

Really interesting character anyway. One of the 'true gods' of the Marvel Universe, along with Infinity, Eternity, and Death.
