Take basically nice, kinda undersocialized geek. Add a visually rich culture which historically has more leeway for sexual exploration than the US and easy access to cheap consumer electronics. Put them into situation where as a smart person, they are expected to perform and perform and do amazing things and be fantastic successes - oh, and by the way, they're expected to be socially apt and meet a nice girl and did you know there's a recession on, so the chance of being a phenomenal success is about nil?
