And when I finally DO make myself start working on this damn piece I've been avoiding all week, what happens? Just as I'm starting to get a decent state of flow on it, fucking Flash 8 fucking stops responding to toolbar shortcuts. Again. Every other keystroke still works. But no amount of changing focus will make the toolbar shortcuts work, none of the tricks I've picked up will do it... I end up flailing helplessly at the keyboard screaming.

How the hell can someone ship a piece of software with this fundamental a bug in it? Do all the testers at Macromedia only select tools by dragging their mouse to the toolbar, clicking on the tool, and then going back into the work area? What the fuck is with this fucking thing?

Fuck it. Luckily Flash 8 has a 'save as mx2004' option. I'm reinstalling mx2004 because, while it had a milder version of this bug, at least the fucking goddamn toolbar shortcuts would come back after clicking on the stage or something, instead of having to quit the goddamn program.

THIS is the other reason I have been having tons of trouble working. Because AG has switched to Flash 8. God knows why. Maybe the Windows version doesn't have this stupid, stupid, UI bug. And it felt like less hassle to upgrade my copy than to constantly say 'can you send me this reference file in MX2004'. But I always forget that FLASH PEAKED AT VERSION 5 and it's been a quick slide into HELL ever since.

There is no fucking excuse for this 'stop responding to toolbar shortcuts' behavior. Ever. I've had my left hand on the keyboard to change tools quickly and transparently since, oh, two weeks into using Deluxe Paint on my Amiga. Every fucking art program in existence lets me hit keys on the keyboard to change tools. I have never had a problem with this kind of garbage happening in ANY other program.

I've been avoiding working on this piece not just because of issues with doing something large and having it have to be "great" when I find that fundamentally incompatible with the methods I have for working in Flash, but because I HAVE BEEN DOING IT WITH A SHITTY EXCUSE FOR A TOOL that CAN'T RELIABLY DO BASIC EDITING OPERATIONS.

Why the fuck does the entire fucking online animation industry use this piece of garbage, and keep on upgrading to new versions that tease us with hints of useful features but only give us new bugs in the basic use of the program?

Back to the earliest version I can get away with. Waste a fucking hour changing the keyboard shortcuts and installing the useful extensions I've discovered. Then maybe I can get some actual goddamn fucking progress on this thing I've been spinning my wheels over for a week.

At least I won't have to fight things like a color mixer that's inexplicably half the size it used to be, in a palette with the same minimum size.
