Interesting analysis of very very early Tarot imagery. Contains lots and lots of casual bitching about later deliberate misinterpretation by mystics of the 1700s and beyond.

I find the Tarot imagery fascinating because it's just so rich in layers - it's a structure to hang a sequence of images on, and to read your own meaning into. The layers and layers of meaning that people have interpreted into these oblique little engravings over the centuries is endlessly potent. It's like fairy tales: a seed to grow something around.

This time, I'm thinking about using it for a series of images on FC07's theme of spy stuff. A bunch of furry noir images. Discovering that the Sicilian name for the first trump is "The Fugitive" rather than the more familiar "Fool" made me cackle with delight. I love it when things synchronize like that!
