First I beat my head against Quark at work, then this weeeird problem I've been having at home gets worse... ever since I upgraded to OSX 10.2 ("Jaguar"), I've been having this intermittent failure of all my art programs. Oh, they still work fine, but after Some Mysterious Event, I can't hold down the space bar to summon the hand tool and quickly move around the canvas! (or apple-space for the magnifier, or option to turn AI's pen tool in to the corner point tool...)

And the weird thing is that logging out, and back in again, will fix it... for a while. So it's something I'm running causing this tough-to-track problem. Damnit, I don't want to de-customize my system and start adding things until it happens again! I like it the way it is, except for this!

I was hoping to get an in-progress picture of [livejournal.com profile] tugrik through Illustrator in time to hand him a CD and the pencil rough at FC, but with this getting in my way two nights in a row, there's no way that's happening now. *sigh*

Have you tried looking around for updates to those programs? I'd help more, but I know ab-so-lutely nothing about macstuff. Except that it's really COOL and expensive as HELL. Want to learn!

Yeah, I'm updated. This one seems to be the system doing something wrong, because it doesn't just happen with one program, or even with stuff from the same company... Maybe after FC I'll make a new account on my machine and build up in it, to see what happens.

I seen a few quirks with friends Graphic .Apps and Jaguar,... Here is what i found/did:

A) Norton Utilities causing Kernel panics and/or slowdowns. Problem: Kernel Extension. Fix: Update to latest version (Hard to do in some computers, you may have to login as "Root.")
B) Quicktime Pro v. 6.1 conflicting with several programs, specially Final Cut Pro. Problem: A "Permissions" related one. Fixes: Run Apple's Disk Utilities, select affected/main HD, click/run "Repair Permissions." (Hard to in some computers. "Root" doesn't help. Reinstall of FCP necessary.)
C) Roxio's Toast conflicting with several .Apps, specially iMovie and FCP. Problem: Unable to save project to "Quicktime" format (Grayed out/Dialog box disappears.) Fixes: Update Toast to latest, and/OR, remove the "export to toast/vcd" plug-in from the iMovie/FCP's "Quicktime plug-ins" folder.

Hope this helps. =)

Addendum:

After re-reading your post, i would recommend trying (B) first, then (A), then (C),...

I don't have any of the programs you mention on my computer, so (obviously) none of them are the culprit. Thanks anyway!

(well, okay, I have Toast, but this problem's got nothing to do with QT export.)

Try (B) anyway, if you wish. It did solve a few Macs' problems i have worked on, be them Graphical, Gaming or Net Surfers units, specially if you have installed/updated a few programs in yours (Not just QT 6.1.) Nothing to lose, maybe something to gain ;)
