[Poll #325448]

I find myself wondering this because when I was at Trader Joe's and the person who rang me up actually put the receipt in the bag. And it was kinda nice. 99% of the time I get the receipt with the change, and it's a hassle to get out of the way for the next customer and separate the receipt and stuff the change in my purse

I suspect that the receipt-in-hand policy is for that small segment of customers who stops at the end of the aisle, a bit aside, and meticulously looks over the thing for a $.05 difference. Annoys the hell out of me, personally; I'm juggling enough already, and I don't want to shove it in with my cash where it'll get forgotten for a month.

Yeah, it kinda bugs me to get a receipt, some bills, and coins pressed into my hand after I pay. I don't put coins in my wallet, so I usually end up juggling things around to get the coins in my pocket, the bills in my wallet, my purchase out of everyone's way, and the receipt in the trash or something. With a card, there's fewer worries, so I don't mind getting handed the receipt... seems a lot of people in the poll have similar results.

I do this thing where I actually try to track my spending. So I ALWAYS ask for the receipt. If it gets put in the bag it's forgotten instantly.

Also, the only time I use actual cash are at places that don't accept debit and don't give receipts anyway. The soda machine at work and the espresso cart. Cash is icky. I have a real phobia about it. o.o

Yeah, me too. I'd rather get handed the receipt. :)

Around here, at least in the supermarkets, they don't package the groceries for you, so you get the receipt and your cash stuffed in your hand. Generally, I just stuff the receipt in the bag and forget about it until I have to use it again (I have one of those canvas bags).

With cash, I don't really care - if they hand me the receipt, I just stuff it in the bag and forget about it.

Plastic, debit, I get testy if they don't hand me the receipt. In the big is gone and forgotton - I keep track of my spending, and if I paid plastic, I put the receipt into my wallet so I'll remember to record it.

(I should do this for cash, too, but I track cash when I get it, if it comes from an ATM)

If I pay with cash, bills go into my wallet and change and receipt ends up in my pocket, usually while I'm moving out of the register line.

If I use plastic, receipt goes in wallet, no exceptions. It's the only way I can make sure that I won't go minus on my checking account. :/

I'm one of those annoying folks who always checks the receipt. Especially after having three cashiers in a row at three different stores screw up my purchases. If it's a carge slip, I especially want it if the slip and the receipt are seperate papers.

I'm an old fuddy duddy.

That's one of the many things I like about shopping there. They are relaxed enough that, in my experience, if there is something wrong the manager or clerk will check it and deal with it on the spot.

I was awfully confused by the second question until I realized it's intended to summarize both answers. Clever, but I'd hate to have to answer a 5-question like that!

Anyway, whether I want it in hand or out of the way depends on control. With cash, it's pretty much entirely up to me how much I hand over. With a card, things MIGHT go seriously agley. You can't slip a digit on a $20 bill, and no one can use the serial number to withdraw from your account.

I keep credit card receipts, but not cash receipts. But the receipt has to go in the bag; in my pocket, it'll just get crumpled and ruined. So I developed the habit of rooting through all bags looking for receipts when I get home.

If cash, receipt go in bag.
If charge, receipt go in hand because receipt go in wallet.
Simple, da?

Long live glorious Trader Joe's!
