So.
I'm seriously considering doing a 24-hour comic with this alien taur girl I've been drawing. If I can find an end to aim for. It's kinda against the rules, I know, but it's part of my theory of improvisation - improv and jamming goes a lot smoother with a structure beneath, even if you don't end it the way you originally expect to. Change horses in midstream, sure, but start out with a horse in case you don't find another one to switch to. If you don't have one in the first place, you end up flailing around aimlessly.
And because I am insane, I will do it direct in pen. There may be some paste-overs of really botched panels, and maybe veeeeeery rough thumbnails - but mostly just me, pen, paper, and my skills.
I might have to experiment first and find a line weight of pen that I can work larger with, that'll scale down to the same size - do splash pages at 100%, multi-panel pages at 150% or so. Build some templates and stuff, so all the calculation's out of the way.
And because I am insane, I am contemplating presenting it in realtime - as each page is done, quickly scan it and post it. Probably on DA as they have bandwidth to spare; do LJ posts that leech their bandwidth for it, too. Interesting comments might actually affect the course of the story as it happens if I catch them soon enough.
Did I mention that I'm insane?

Date: 2004-05-08 01:45 pm (UTC)Scott just recently published a trade of some of the 24 hour comics that've come his way. There's a couple of variations in the intro, such as the Neil Gaiman (stop at whatever you have after 24 hours) and another where you keep going until the story's done.
This whole thing makes me grin. :"D

Date: 2004-05-08 10:29 pm (UTC)I've wanted to do a 24-hour comic ever since reading about them. I just haven't had the insanity to do it. But with a half an idea poking at the back of my head... maybe I will.

And hoorah for 24hour comics.
in your pen style, it will be the awesome.

Date: 2004-05-08 04:26 pm (UTC)Ain't no harm in having some ideas beforehand, I think. McCloud's own 'stack of random art books' is a little like that, though purer in its... self-containedness.
The realtime idea could certainly add some excitement. Perhaps a 'no replying to comments until afterward' rule would be a good thing, too.
Now you've got me wanting to take on some kind of wacky all-nighter challenge too.

Date: 2004-05-10 01:58 am (UTC)Anything you put together will probably put my own effort (http://www.tomorrowlands.org/comics/24hr/) totally to shame. I'll look forward to reading it -- and commenting along the way, if you follow through with that. Just give us drooling fanthings some advance notice so we can sneak open browsers at work, eh? :)
