a book review
Apr. 16th, 2004 02:27 pmSlashdot review of 'Twisty Little Passages', a book on the history of IF. Ignore the legions of dopey comments. I don't think it'd tell me anything I didn't already know, but I'd certainly flip through it if I ran across it in the bookstore!
Also, this reminds me that I really should try having another go at that maze-for-roleplay-not-getting-lost i was working on for Puzzlebox. Because being chased through a maze by a monster can be exciting if their motives are more than simple hunger.

Date: 2004-04-17 09:31 am (UTC)My first firsthand experience with computers of any type was at a friend's house in 1978, playing Adventure, Star Trek, and especially Rogue (ported years later to the C64 and Atari 800 as 'Telengard') on his father's terminal to his office, on a 300 baud acoustical modem. You actually had to dial the phone by hand and then stick the receiver in the cups, then hit Originate. We would all sneak into his home office after 10:00pm, after his folks were asleep, shut the door, and spend all night taking turns at the keyboard. Each of us usually got a turn in the command chair, with the 4 other kids peering over at the blue-green screen from behind, alternately wincing and celebrating quietly so as not to awaken the adults. For that whole summer, it was the coolest thing in the world.
