resetting the PMU
So I updated some stuff on my Mac - new version of Quicktime, security update. I just shut down instead of resetting; I'd decided to slouch around and play video games for a while. A little later, my mother called, concerned about the quake she'd heard about today. I went to turn the machine on to check the website I use for quake updates... and it didn't want to turn on.
Now, the power switch on the machine has been not working for quite a long time. Doesn't light up, doesn't respond. Though the reset button beneath it works fine. Funny, that. I have an old Apple Extended keyboard plugged in via a USB/ADB adaptor, and use the power switch on that. Works fine, normally. But it didn't today. Not a quick tap, not a longer press, nothing. Unplugging the machine, the keyboard, etc, did nothing either.
So I walked on down to the Mac store in the mall and waited a bit for my turn with the "Mac Genius", then explained my problem; the guy said I should try resetting the power management unit - apparently it gets confused now and then. Told me to go search for "reset PMU" on Apple's site, which I did at the first free machine in the store I could find.
I'm not sure when the last time is that my machine's actually been off. I put it to sleep when I'm not using it. I think the last time it was powered down was when I was using the last major version of the OS. And not for months. It just stays on.
Might be that something during installing Panther put the PMU into a confused state, too - I've noticed that it hasn't really been auto-sleeping; the screenblanker comes on, goes for a while, then it wakes up again. I could see 'confused PMU' as a reason for this behavior... I'm walking back home to push that button, wait a few seconds, and try powering up. Wish me luck.
Updates coming, one way or the other. I hope it's just this; I don't have any money for repairs right now.
Addendum, back home: Nope, just pushing the reset button, waiting a few seconds, and powering back up didn't help... making some supper, then I think I'll haul it in and see what they say. Grarh. Might see if I can scrounge a few bucks up to replace the PRAM battery, but I am really broke at the moment.
