huzzah!

Last night I finally got around to starting up IE on Rik's machine and seeing how badly the Absinthe site breaks on IE. Which, of course, it does. The vast majority of my traffic is Firefox, but IE accounts for enough that I needed to do something.

This morning I dumped one conditional comment into the head and bang, it worked. Man, I really love having the right tool for the job. IE users get a second or so of broken layout before the "IE7" script kicks in, but that's good enough for me - it probably saved me at least a day or so of swearing at IE as I try to fix it, then swearing some more as the trickery I do for that interfered in the rendering for other browsers!

Also, the comic really starts today, with page 1 showing up. So, yeah, read it on the website or via 5glasses, the lj feed, or via whatever online comics aggregator you may prefer. This is probably the last time I'll tell you where to go read it until I do an actual attempt to promote it around page 10 or so.

mac os is not perfect

Last week, the HD on my work box died near the end of the day. It spent the rest of the week in IT, where they painfully tried to do a zillion other things (so I'm told) before admitting that "hey maybe the user has something when she says that it sounds like it's hitting an error in the middle of the swap file" and throwing in a new HD.

Sadly, they did not copy over all my documents and settings - but at least they left the old drive in the machine as a secondary drive. Copy from the Finder and it aborts the whoooole copy because there's an error on one file, good job Mac folks, maybe I should hunt down their bug database because that is a total pain in the ass to work around.

Pain in the ass, at least, unless you know to pop open the command shell and do cp -Rv /Volumes/olddrive/Users/username/ .... one reboot later and MY SETUP IS BACK *happydance*
