resetting the PMU

So I updated some stuff on my Mac - new version of Quicktime, security update. I just shut down instead of resetting; I'd decided to slouch around and play video games for a while. A little later, my mother called, concerned about the quake she'd heard about today. I went to turn the machine on to check the website I use for quake updates... and it didn't want to turn on.

Oh dear. )
Addendum, back home: Nope, just pushing the reset button, waiting a few seconds, and powering back up didn't help... making some supper, then I think I'll haul it in and see what they say. Grarh. Might see if I can scrounge a few bucks up to replace the PRAM battery, but I am really broke at the moment.

Well, there goes the money I was hoping to spend on FC, I think. Hauled my machine over to the Apple store in the mall, talked to the resident tech; he poked at it, tried a few things, they didn't work. He thinks from my description of symptoms that, yeah, it's the power management unit. It could be the power supply or the CPU, both of which cost... more. Half again as much in the case of CPU issues. Fuck, I hope it's just the PMU. Which... you know... I think the thing was still under warranty when the power button on the machine and its light stopped working in the first place. *sigh* It should hopefully be ready by the time I get back from the holidays, and the check from the Mouse will, I hope, be waiting for me too. Next machine I get is gonna be a portable. Not as expandable, not as fast, but if something goes wrong I don't have to kill myself hauling it around. I felt so conspicuous lugging this thing the seven or so blocks and through the mall. Buy the previous generation Powerbook, used/refurb; the current ones will probably be at that stage by the time I can scrounge up the money. I'll be going home for the holidays anyway, pretty soon - I fly out on the 25th, and will likely appear on LJ and mucks sporadically from my mother's Windows machine (what's a good mu* client for older Windows boxen? Or... hm, does rdwarf have Tinyfugue installed? Likely! Telnet there and dig the commands out of the back of my head... drat, Terminal's locked down on the machines here at the Apple Store... grab GLTerm off the net, install it, telnet... yes! it does. Good. Okay, I'll be mucking from home, though I only have the passwords for Peggy@FM and Kalinda@Taps handy.). I don't think I'm going to install an IM client on it, though. *grin* So. I'll see you folks in the new year. Enjoy your holidays, whatever your beliefs may be. Try not to worry too much about Having a good Time. This December has been one of the most eventful and interesting months of my life.
