During lunch today we watched part of 'Three Caballeros'.

I think there's a subtext to this movie, apart from all the 'Good Neighbor Policy' stuff.

"We're three caballeros! Three gay caballeros!"

And then in the next scene, Donald and the green parrot are flobbling their buttocks up the body of the red whateverhieis. With lots of other shots of these three giys waaaaay too close for het manly comfort. 'Three Caballeros' is Donald's big Mexican-themed coming-out party, despite the sequence where he lusts after a human woman via the miracle of rear projection.

Well, yeah, but this came out about the same time as Der Fuhrer's Face. So while Donald may be a flamer who goes south of the border to pick up psittaform hardbodies, we can at least feel secure that he's a all-American flamer who truly loves his country.

At a time of crisis like this, I find that very comforting.

I have heard before that during WWII, the armed forces turned a blind eye to homosexuals in the military. During Wartime it was far more important to defeat the Axis Powers than it was to harrass capable gay servicemen and women.

The three bird-guys in Three Caballeros always did seem awfully huggy and touchy-feely. The entire sequence with Donald chasing the local girls was probably just a beard.

A beard?

Sorry, I'm a breeder and still expanding my vocabulary. This is a new one.

A disguise...

Beard -- A woman who is involved with or married to a (supposedly) gay man to help keep him closeted or to help hide the fact that he is gay. Some gay actors from the old Hollywood time period were married to women (usually arranged by the motion picture studio) as a way to hide their homosexuality from the public. To the general public, a man couldn't possibly be queer if he was dating women or married to one.

"It will be so wonderful to have some time to ourselves. Bye bye, dear!"

"Don't come back!"

"...do you think she suspects?"

Okay... now that's funny. And never occurred to me, even though I saw the movie again just recently. :>

I just wanted to see the square trees. Honest. I didn't want to see it because of the three old biddy dykes!

Eyvind Earle's square trees just ROCK! As do Tom Oreb's wonderful character designs.

Has there ever been a male fairy (the magical kind) in any animated film?

Offhand, I can think of one: the 'Technical Fairy, 1st Class' who appeared in a number of the wartime 'Private SNAFU' cartoons WB did.

(These were B&W shorts done for the soldiers, not for domestic distribution, and are quite hard to get ahold of. They're somewhat raunchier than normal shorts of the time. Even rarer were the 'Hook' shorts, done for the Navy - only a few exist, I believe. Hook had the same format as Snafu: lessons about proper conduct for a soldier are given by watching the title character behave in a very improper - and funny - manner.)

Does Peter Pan count as a fairy? If not, he really should.
