From yesterday and today.

From today...

I watched a random sampling of 'Heavy Traffic' near the end of work today, because I need to get a feel for Ralph Bakshi's design sense. He sure likes big bubble eyes. This explains the last drawing.

I need to get a new sketchbook; this one is almost full. There's three or four leaves left.

I like the third and fourth the best. Using the side of the pencil gives them a charcoaly quality that looks practiced and quick at the same time. Good stance with Fiona, too. It's both anger and a little Broadway at the same time. :"D The first and last quirked an eyebrow, mostly because of the size of the lips. They made me think something that I'm sure isn't the case, but the flicker was there. You certainly display energy and emotion with these. Like Crumb, I bet you'll find a lot of value with these books in years to come.

Hmm. Probably that I'm a racist. Spümcø is very aggressively honkytown, and this may be rubbing off on me. I hope it isn't.

The big lips in the first one may have been inspired by someone on the bus, or may have just been 'I feel like drawing huge lips right now' - it's long ago enough that I'm not sure. The guy with the white spare tire lips in the last one is because of watching snippets of 'Heavy Traffic'; there's one sequence set to "Maybelline' that involves caricature-of-caricature blacks with very 30's-cartoony shapes, and the gargantuan cartoon lips.

It's all just playing with the shapes - it just happens that some combinations of exaggeration are considered wrong. But, you know, big lips are just fun to draw, damnit.

Badly stated on my part. Sorry. I didn't mean to imply that you were racist, but that the drawings could be interpreted that way. Sort of a heads up in case you wanted to avoid a rabid PC person and didn't see where they were coming from first.
