Sleeping Beauty, widescreen limited engagement at Disney's theater on Hollywood Boulevard:

Gorgeous. Fucking. Dragon.

But I may be biased.

Quiet sarcastic comments were traded about the plot and characterizations. My take on a moral for the whole film is 'magic is bad': the fairies are pretty much responsible for everything that goes wrong in the lives of the princess and prince.

And, oh, Maleficient's minions are so cool - their design manages to be both comedic and menacing at the same time.

When you get a chance to see it, I have to wonder what you think of the dragon in Miyazaki's "Spirited Away". I just saw it tonight, and I think it's the first asian-style dragon I really liked the design of. He was way-cool. :)

There was a preview for that in front of 'Beauty'. It looks mildly interesting; maybe if it actually shows up in more theatres than the El Capitan I'll go see it some weekend.

I really have no thoughts on the dragon design there aside from that it made me think of the 'luck-dragon' from 'Neverending Story', who was also lengthy, furry, and semi-asian. I was there to see cartoon cubism, not anime stylings, so I mostly just twiddled my thumbs through the previews.

They ran 'Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom' before the feature, too, which was cool: the design for TWP&B was done by Tom Oreb, who was also the design lead on 'Sleeping Beauty'. Plus, TWP&B is in widescreen.

There's just something special about ultra-abstracted designs moving around on the huge canvas.

I have this.. Pen.

It doesn't work as a pen, and its wings are floppy and broken, but it's the dragon from Sleeping Beauty. Want it? I can send it to you via oCe, perhaps.

Oooh. Another black dragon to go with my very small collection of dragon stuff...

I too loved that dragon! I don't care if it is 'evil'-- the design ROCKS!

I kinda debated Peggy-dressed-as-Maleficient doodles, but wearing all black doesn't go with being all black.

All the design in that movie rocks. The design was the reason I went to see this thing.

I will admit something here for your amusement. When I was very young, that dragon terrified my sister and I. Then again, so did Michael Jackson's Thriller. I wish I could say it was Jackson himself that scared me, as that'd make me hip and ironic. Or something. Just thought I'd share.

I was old enough for the eighties re-release that the whole thing just bored the hell out of me. It still does. It's a consistently slow movie; the only really fun parts are when Maleficient is involved.
