This goes way past "mash-up" and straight into "plunderphonics". Or maybe into "using unsuspecting amateurs as your session musicians". The ownership issues are a nightmare but this is way cool stuff.
Sounds taken, made better, and distributed optimally, achieving greater-than-sum results through superior organisation. It warms the iron cockles of my primary-thru-tertiary mooncatamite hearts. :D
That was exceedingly cool. It would be fun to get all those disparate people together and film THAT to see what they think of what was made of their contributions. Thanks for the link!
Awww yeah! Added bonus, I've personally used/owned about half of those pieces of equipment (but I'd really love to know what the one with the circular dial of LED's is...)
Wow, seriously awesome stuff, and it comes together into a very listenable song, rather than a lot of weirder mashup-style stuff.
This reminds me the most of Amon Tobin, specifically his last album, Foley Room, which basically did this same thing with random recordings of sounds, plus stuff from foley artists (sound effects for films), but even from a few studio sessions with the Kronos Quartet.
