I can tell which IM services have global penetration because of this, too. Skype is big in Egypt, and that was a large contributor to why I never use it.
I did think of doing something like that, but I really hate managing my contact list - I prefer to just leave it open to all when I'm available, and stay obscure. Skype's prominent 'search for contact' function means that obscurity just isn't happening for me there, though!
plus, well, I really hate the idea of having more than one IM program sitting there in the background, sucking up swap space. If Adium ever adds Skype (not bloody likely) then maybe I'll be available on there again. Maybe.
