Wow. As April Fools Days on the Internet go, this one's been pretty pathetic. Nothing but people trying to get me to click on links to a video of a particular song. No stories of joke mergers, no almost-plausible discoveries, just HA HA RICKROLLED. I mean, the most clever thing I saw was DA replacing everyone's icons with one worshipping mudkips. For half the day. Not even the whole day. It kinda made me smirk. Kinda. The fake announcements from Google and Blizzard were at least smirk-inducing, as well.

It's not even a notably bad song. It's just generic. I guess it's better than a day of HA HA GOATSE.CX. I guess. Geeze, don't people have somewhere better to get their funny from than propagating the endless teen idiocy of *chan boards, though?

I guess there's just not much joy in Mudville this year.

Well, Google did pretty good today overall. Both Google America and Australia.

I'm sorry, but they're never gonna give it up.

Honestly, I much preferred the simplicity of this year. You knew right away what was coming, because everyone did basically the same things. And there was none of the usual April Fool's "Oh god, is this true? Because it's horrible news if it is. But... oh. Oh, right. Bleah." feeling.

Uncreative but safe. I guess I'm finally at an age where I can appreciate that style of humor. Nick At Nite, here I come, I suppose.

I felt like it's just... a placeholder. I want to observe April Fools but I can't be bothered; so here's some utterly predictable 'humor' that everyone says is funny.

And what's worse is the way it tracks the growing influence of 4chan and its ilk. 'Rickrolling' in itself is nothing distasteful, just dull after the first time you hear of the concept - but I worry that anyone spreading it is also spreading the emotional deadness that the 4chan culture is full of.

FWIW, if there is a silver lining, I did notice a lot of folks elsejournal were annoyed with the trend of April Fools' Day "jokes" that rely on "being an asshat" which aren't really funny to anyone except the person making the joke (and their gaggle of sycophants).

So perhaps there is hope the tide is turning and eventually folks will realize how done to death it really is.

Well...

I'm not entirely sure Project Moose (http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Project+MOOSE) from the Online Dictionary isn't a prank.

But yeah, the rest of it was pretty damn stupid.

Okay, Blizzard's fake announcements at least involved a little work and were amusing.

They did a whole Molten Core Atari-era trailer! That was great fun.

Well, it's kinda area specific, but This one was pretty good. (http://strobist.blogspot.com/2008/04/overclock-your-speedlight-for-more.html)

And this one was one of my favorites from a few years ago (http://web.archive.org/web/20010516210056/lzip.sourceforge.net/)

I liked the Legend of Zelda movie trailer since someone obviously put a lot of work into it.

I hadn't seen that and hot diggity, it's impressive. I hope it's one of those lone-obsessive efforts that results in breakthrough and acclaim.

Rainfall Films seems to be a number of people, and has done more than just the Zelda trailer. Still, it's very well done for a "joke".

I was going to claim I had converted to Scientology, but I was afraid it'd just inspire more arguments. :D

This is my favorite April 1st joke: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/04/01/npenguin101.xml

Well, I liked the announcement on City of Heroes (http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/archives/2008/04/city_of_heroes_47.html)'s website today.

Freem!

Thing is, my first response was, "That's great! Stylistically wonderful, and it would be nice to get more visual curs for some stuff." My second thought was, "Wait, that totally contradicts the art direction since early on when they stopped trying for a comic-book look." The third was, "Wait a sec... Deleting sound effects to make room for the graphics? Okay, obvious April Fool's. Bah."

The bastards!

The BBC did a lovely little ad for their I-Player which featured the discovery of flying penguins. I don't suppose it really _fooled_ anyone, but it's the thought that counts, right?

It's here, if you're interested, in the UK, or use a proxy: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/page/item/epeng001.shtml?src=ip_potpw
