I was thinking about how to visually organize a friends graph to make it more readable while on the bus. Instead, I came up with a more interesing thought: graph some other relationship. Namely, artistic influences.

I want to see who the people I know are influenced by. Ranging from that person you slavishly copied when you were a teen to the people whose influences are more subtle, but definitely there. And then feed it all into the same program used for the friends graphs I've been fiddling with lately. See how everyone clusters.

To make my life easier, if you want to be on this graph, you have to give me the info in a format I can just cut and paste. Like this:

"influence"->"me"

If you see someone else list a TV show or the like, and you know the name of the person who's responsible for the design, point that out in a reply to their reply. Especially if you're influenced by 'em too.

In the case of being influenced by someone who hangs around this pseudonym-loving furry world, list whichever name they're most prone to being referred by, and note on the same line whatever else they go by. And list whatever various art names you're willing to own up to at the top of your list, for the same purposes.

This isn't about 'who do you like', it's about 'you'd draw differently if you'd never encountered this artist'. For instance, I enjoy looking at Arthur Rackham's work, and would like to swipe his style for some fairy-taleish illustrations, but I don't think looking at his work has had any real effect on how I draw.

I'll start.

Peganthyrus, no art under other names.

"Al Hirschfeld"->"Peganthyrus"
"Carol Lay"->"Peganthyrus"
"Edward Gorey"->"Peganthyrus"
"Fleischer Studios"->"Peganthyrus"
"George Herriman"->"Peganthyrus"
"Jack Kirby"->"Peganthyrus"
"John K"->"Peganthyrus"
"Mike Mignola"->"Peganthyrus"
"Matt Howarth"->"Peganthyrus"
"Ralph Steadman"->"Peganthyrus"
"Walt Kelly"->"Peganthyrus"
"Winsor McCay"->"Peganthyrus"
"Ed Emberly"->"Peganthyrus"
"Phil Foglio"->"Peganthyrus"
"Warner Brothers"->"Peganthyrus" //it's hard to nail down the design credits here since they all influenced each other a lot
"Ed Benedict"->"Peganthyrus" //HB limited-animation character designer
"Frank Miller"->"Peganthyrus"
"Stan Sakai"->"Peganthyrus"
"Jon Davis"->"Peganthyrus" //Yes, the Garfield guy. A secret shame.
"Bruce Timm"->"Peganthyrus"
"Jotto"->"Peganthyrus" //J. Otto Seibold
"Cliff Sterett"->"Peganthyrus" //Check spelling. 'Polly and Her Pals' artist.
"Steve Galacchi"->"Peganthyrus"

Funny how my influences are either from the past twenty years, or from the first fifty years of the 20th century - I have absolutely no use for the art of the sixties or seventies.

(oh yeah, and to make it easier, just type ""->"My name" and cut and paste it several times, then fill in the quotes.)

If this actually gets responses, I figure I'll build the graph in a week or two.

It's 'Jim Davis'... 'Jon' is his character in the strip.

Is 'Jotto' supposed to be a spoof of 'Giotto,' who is considered by many to be the first true Renaissance painter?

You spelled 'Gallacci' wrong, too, but it's only Gallacci so who gives a fuck, I say.

Oops, and oops. I knew Iwas spelling Gallacci wrong, but was too lazy to look it up.

Jotto does weird, crazy stuff. I think you can look at 'jotto.com' for his stuff, or pull out my copy of TMBG's 'Istanbul' single.

The thing is... I don't draw at all like most of the people I could write for this, and I don't have a lot of the stuff that you can see direct influence from online. My highschool art teacher was a big art history fan and would encourage us to experiment, so if anyone knew me 3 years ago they would have been like "oooh, I see that." but now since I draw nothing but furry crap, not as evident. And I don't have anything online from highschool, I'll look though. I know there were pictures of the science building 1/4th covered in bubble wrap (when Chang and I decided Cristo was our new god, but ran out of bubble wrap) in the yearbook.

"Yoshitaka Amano"->"Tabris"
"Robert Rauschenburg"->"Tabris"
"Chang Duk Kang"->"Tabris" //he's a friend... I don't know who influenced him
"Basquiat"->"Tabris"
"Rothko"->"Tabris" // I like color... *shrug*
"Henry Moore"->"Tabris" // I had a scull sculpture phase...
"Alexander Calder"->"Tabris" //My friend Alex and I made an entire wire zoo senior year, because we were bored and had wire.
"Edward Gorey"->"Tabris"
"Ralph Steadman"->"Tabris"
"Rebbecca Guay"->"Tabris"
"Georges Rouault"->"Tabris" //me+ oil piant+ canvas= fauvist puke.
"Gustav Klimt"->"Tabris"
"Aubrey Beardsley"->"Tabris"

furry:

Uh, I think I should have added that the bubble wrap thing was part abstract art/Cristo worship and half senior prank day.

We also in honor of a film me saw featuring Rauschenberg, (if you're not familiar with the GUY, picture Jim Morrison + paint thinner brain damage + a glass of milk) We "glued"(industrial sticky taped) glasses full of elmer's glue (to look like milk) to random areas in the school and then put little framed art plaques under with titles like "artist donkey with Milk," "picture of class of 1923 with milk" or "Principle's car in Tree with Milk." (someone else put the chair in the tree, we just made it art)

This is what happens when dorks vandalize.

Adore him?! Hell I have Rothko stationary.

He's one of those guys where if you see his stuff on slides or in books it gives you an "eh..." impression. But when you see an exhibit in person, it's orgasmic.
And who can't love big pretention butch guys who paint?

Plus a bunch of unnamed sources here and there. Really limited, yah. Most of it was while I was younger. Nowadays though I rarely look at other art for inspiration, though I probably should. Mike Weiringo, whoever the guy is that does the brushwork werewolves in the Werewolf book, David Choe, Dave McKean, Matt Harpold, Peter Bednar, and there's probably more. God, what a lengthy and potentially embarassing list...but hey, I'm game. Although there's a lot of people I like, like Froud, and Goya, and yes, Rackham, that I didn't really get that much influenced by, although I liked 'em quite a bit. Many of these are from my misspent youth when I really wanted to be the next Babes & Barbarians artist, god help us all.

Ursula Vernon, aka UrsulaV and Caliban

"Larry Elmore"->"Ursula Vernon"

"Susan Seddon Boulet"->"Ursula Vernon"
"Michael Whelan"->"Ursula Vernon"

"Gerald Brom"->"Ursula Vernon"
"H. R. Giger"->"Ursula Vernon"
"Luis Royo"->"Ursula Vernon"
"Lawrence Alma-Tadema"->"Ursula Vernon"
"John Waterhouse"->"Ursula Vernon" (Maybe a "Pre-Raphaelites" section would be more appropriate, since it was more of a general mishmash.)
"Chris Achilleos"->"Ursula Vernon"
"Robert Bateman"->"Ursula Vernon"
"Don Maitz"->"Ursula Vernon"
"Quinton Hoover"->"Ursula Vernon"
"Tony DiTerlizzi"->"Ursula Vernon" (Does it still count when it's because an art director said "Here. Draw it like this guy would."?)

"Berkly Breathed" -> "Barberio" // Natch
"Kosuke Fujishima" -> "Barberio" // What this guy can do with screen is astounding. What he can do with ink wash takes my breath away.
"Bryan Talbot" -> "Barberio" // He is the god of comic form, layout, placement and composition. You *must* get a copy of 'One Bad Rat'.
"2000AD" -> "Barberio" // BORAG THUNGG, EARTHLETS! If it wasnt for this, I probably would not draw at all.
"Dada" -> "Barberio" // Graphic design is art also. And vice versa.
"Bill Watterson" -> "Barberio" // Natch
"Cosgrove Hall" -> "Barberio" // Dangermouse. Need I say more. When you see how I draw mice, you'll understand kind of.
"Jean-Pierre Jeunet" -> "Barberio" // Showed me how to look at things.
"Simon Fraser" -> "Barberio" // Small press wonder artist. Try to track down a copy of Lux and Alby 'Sign on and save the universe'
"Magritte" -> "Barberio" // Ceci n'est pas une pipe (because words can be part of art, and so can the way you frame it)
"David Simpson" -> "Barberio" // I probably wouldnt have tried to work in strip form without prompting from Dave and hints on how to do it.
