Part of it is probably due to using the same cords for the past several decades (I know my C64's floppy drive used one). Also, it's probably almost impossible to buy a non-polarized outlet now, and if you don't know how the wires need to be attached… I know my great-grandmother's house has outlets that aren't all wired correctly, and sometimes you need to turn the plug over if you're using a fan or something similar.
