I wonder if the really complex ones require GPS or something. Some of them are clearly showing off like the one in the bttom left corner where there are standing circles of corn in the middle of a depressed area.

My guess is people've started doing it just as an art form. People will go to an amazing amount of effort for art forms. :)

Certainly, it shows that they put hard work into making those as art.
