I got my new computer. Yay! I'll be spending the next few hours using the Tiger update CD that came with it, installing all the crap I need, moving over my data, and configuring it the way my old machine was set up. This wasn't typed on it; I think the wireless here isn't set up to accept connections from arbitrary machines. I'll work that out once [livejournal.com profile] lediva gets home.

Yay!

Oh, and here's a link to some of the most amazingly curmudgeonely reviews of Mac tools I've ever seen. Especially in the "Very Ugly" category, where the most horrible sins one can commit in design are (a) putting a friendly face on something that can be accomplished via the UNIX shell, because everyone should just learn UNIX and love it!, and (b) having .DS_Store files inside the application's bundle. OH NO.

Wooo awesome! <3 I've found myself using Spotlight obsessively, but you may wanna try reeling it in a bit since it'll be on a laptop by forbidding a lot of directories for it to index under Sysprefs -> Spotlight -> Privacy. That way it won't thrash your laptop so bad indexing. Currently I have it set to keep all my logs out of it, since I use terminal and grep to search those, anyway.

(I think I need more Mac related icons than just the bomb. c.c;)

I already do the Spotlight sort of thing via either LaunchBar or Quicksilver - almost all of my program launching happens by doing apple-esc and typing a few letters. A few documents get launched that way too, but mostly I think of them by the file hierarchy. I'll have to read up on all the Tiger stuff like Spotlight, widgets, etc. But first I'm doing a reformat-and-install of it, and bringing over MY MUSIC!

Everything I want but Sad Mac!

Wow, you rock! Straight from the original artist and perfect size for iconification!

I think I ran across a reference t oher a couple of days ago, so I knew I had to just google for something like "susan kare icons". I knew the set was online somewhere, at least!

Just beware unwanted shortcut changes.

As in file/directory aliases? I only had one in my old system, to put ~/Music on my larger drive.

I was actually thinking keyboard shortcuts, like Spotlight taking over Ctrl-S.

Ah. Yeah, I knew Spotlight had some shortcut (and the default's actualy apple-space, which will be changed because that interferes with image-editing shortcuts). I think the only other new one is the grabbing of another f-key for Dashboard.

The wireless router is MAC-filtering wireless connections, but I think it isn't filtering wired connections. I can't believe your puter doesn't have an ethernet jack, so grab a cable off the shelf in Kin's room (I think all the ones in the milk crate are 50' long) and plug yourself in. (Ooh.) Set 192.168.0.1 as gateway and dns, and the router should hand you an IP address.

Oh, of course it has a wired connection. It's even got a modem built in, for when I go back to 1983. I'll try plugging it in physically in a little while. Thanks!

Actually... it brokenly filters wired connections. As in, to unfilter them, I need to disable filtering, add the MAC address, and re-enable it.

With wireless, I can add addresses on the fly.

Oops, my bad. I misremembered the chain of events from last night.

You can just see the beard on the dude writing those reviews. :D What kind of video card does the laptop sport?

ATI Mobility Radeon 9600. I should be able to run a second display with this sucker!

That's better than my not-so-mobile desktop replacement laptop (ATI Mobility Radeon 9000). :)

Well, this one's only two years old (I think the machine came out in 4Q 03) so of course the card should be better! I gotta hit up crucial.com for some more RAM; if not for the Intel switch, I'd probably be set for another five or six years once I get more than the factory-issue 512 in it.

I think mine's previous owner bought it right before the 9600 came out. It's not like I do a lot of 3D gaming on it, so it works well enough. Desktop replacement notebooks feature some out-of-control mobility GPUs now, some of which are not that much slower than their desktop equivalents.

(I could always shell out $4000+ for something ridiculous like the Hypersonic Aviator EX7 or FX7. Anandtech did a first look on the GeForce Go 7800 GTX in the EX7, and it definitely held its own. Of course, both are actually heavier than my current boat anchor of a laptop...)

Four thousand bucks for a laptop? That's just insane.

Even if it does come painted in heat-sensitive colors.

..geeze. Hypersonic is a Pimped-Out Laptop specialist, it looks like. Personalized text on it, paint external mouse or keyboard to match, all kinds of colors...

From: [identity profile] ultraken.livejournal.com
Actually, it's easy to hit the $4000+ mark without the heat-sensitive colors. Other companies do the "pimped out" thing too, Falcon Northwest and VoodooPC in particular; Alienware uses its own distinctive cases instead. Hypersonic also makes equally excessive desktop systems, workstations, and small form-factor systems. While these custom PC builders offer "pimped" systems as an option, it's just as easy to spend the money on better components. After all, I'd rather my computer run fast instead of just look fast. At least with Hypersonic, you can make it run fast and quietly instead of sounding like a wind tunnel. :)

For hoots, you should give Second Life a whirl. You will find your frame rate may have improved slightly. ^_^

I've got some issues to get over before that happens - I only have 512m of physical memory. SWAP HELL in general, and 2L does not work well in those conditions at all. I tried it yesterday!
