Ashy drifted over and tried out Second Life via Sammi's machine. I made her a hat. And I made a completely different avatar for myself, too. These things happen.

me and Ashy

Start here and hit the next image button to see me and her. Her first-attempt outfit is... um... insane. In a good and typically Ashy way.

The new avatar started out trying to be a random image from my sketchbook, but it drifted into other places. The headcrest was a bit of serindipity. I ended up looking like a Moebius bit player, which is probably never bad.

This is so making me want to start playing Second Life again.

Plus, of course, it's pushing all my Ashy-crush buttons.

Don't worry, I'll probably get sick of it in a week or two.

I know what all those words mean, but that sentence makes no sense to me!

Second Life is so confusing!

The thing that interests me the most is how easy avatar creation seems...

I could make standard Jennet, original Jennet, Evil 1700's Chinese Robe-wearing Evil Man Jennet, Femme Jennet, Male Jennet, the Wasp Jennet...

Mmmm. But my compy sucks, so the urge to join fades.

Yeah. That's part of the appeal. Making stuff is so easy. There's a good chance that the next screenshots tonight or tomorrow night or whatever will have a completely different avatar for me.

Unfortunately, yeah, it's a total bandwidth and processor hog... It's fun, though.

That'd be me, but my hoof was ghosted and not appearing on Peg's end, so you saw a hand that doesn't quite fit or match instead. So no, I wasn't really trying to fulfill my secret Popeye desires intentionally.. that I'll admit to.

who doesn't?

Yeah, I kept thinking "Why does Protocat have one Popeye arm?" but I didn't need to know that badly.

What struck me about Second Life (and this is certainly also true about There, but I noticed it on SL immediately because SL is theoretically more egalitarian in terms of building capability) is that although you're in a world where you can make and do practically anything, just about everyone is obsessed with accumulating surrogate real-world wealth. Everyone's got a big house (or a mansion), everyone's got cars and yachts and piles of bling. Is this the best people can do with omnipotence?

Nevertheless I was thinking about what kind of upgrades I'd need in order to play SL, and it turns out, other than the OS, my machine is already adequate to handle it. But it requires broadband, and I can't justify upping that just for a game, not unless I can get an RL cashflow going there as a builder.

Thats what I thought. You know, the most I want in Second Life is just a nice avatar. When you don't have to worry about rent or living space, you just do whatever:P

Hell, you can F'ing fly! Why the hell you need a car:)

Yeah. And despite the fact that Anyone Can Make Stuff, there's a lot of people who don't. At all. I met someone who'd been on the game about as long as I have (maybe a day or two longer, even) who was broke because she'd spent all her starter money on stuff≤/i> - bought clothes, bought fairy wings, bought a rainbow that followed her around, bought bought bought. And there I am as some weird, mutant girl who's dressed entirely in stuff she threw together on a whim, and has only spent money on texture uploads.

I felt profoundly alien from her.

There's a thread in the 2L forums called something like "post your sexy avatar". They're all photographic texture skins with next to nothing on top of that. A lot of them don't even look like the body shape's that far from the default.

I felt profoundly alien to those people, too.

So many people are just completely discouraged from being creative, taught to ignore everything vaguely like beauty and to never think about it analytically. It's weird. Conform, chase the dreams we feed you.

This whole adventure is going to end up with crusty middle-aged versions of us, in a geodesic love dome in the wilds of Montana, mailing people time bombs full of MDMA-tipped darts, isn't it. :>

There's probably better things to inject into people who may or may not be all alone, but I'm all for the general concept! AUM in the tomato juice, here we come.
