At about three in the morning, I woke up from uneasy dreams. The dreams faded rapidly, leaving only a lingering sense of worry.
The wind was howling outside. And my ears were ringing - both of them, loudly. Occasional thumps must have been loose branches thrown off of of trees, or perhaps even birds launched into the air by the force of the wind. I tried to turn over and go back to sleep, but my ears were ringing too loudly. Slowly they quieted as I worked my jaw, trying to solve whatever was the problem; little stairstep trills of false sound flickered at the edge of hearing as the internal pressure came to match the low pressure outside.
As my ears quieted, so did the wind. It never quite died down, and even at its lowest there was a strong sense of forboding - something like what I imagine being in the eye of a hurricane must be like, a fragile calm floating on the surface of contrary forces. It was an eerie feeling.
It's still windy today. Not as lively, but the air is definitely in motion.
