While I'm being an utter tech-nerd who's pulled out some heavy artillery to kill the pop-up comments box (actually, to keep it, but as a new 'quick reply' link next to the 'reply to this' link), I decided to get silly.

I'm replacing some usernames throughout all of LJ. Well, just ones in the 'lj user' format - [livejournal.com profile] peganthyrus becomes [profile] egypt_urnash. Notice that it still links to me. It just looks different.

And some of you folks I read, and some folks I don't, are also similarly altered.

I just thought you should know that. Because I'm not going to tell you if you are, or not. You'll only know if you get a chance to look over my shoulder before I get bored with this little game.

Did you use a rename token, or some other fancy means of changing your username?

Perhaps a screengrab will help...

The only editing done in the screengrab was to hide the IP addresses, and save it as a really crappy JPEG.

I'm doing Weird, Geeky Things to make this happen; tthe only place these changes take place is in the browsers on my own machine.

The annoying inline reply boxes now let you choose your userpic, so I'm not nearly so annoyed with them now. Just so you know :) Have a spacebunny.

And here I was feeling geeky about the wiki style sheet. *resigns*

I was going to compliment you on it because it's nice and happy-making, too! Geekiness just kinda... happens... with me, sometimes; this really started as a test to make sure only the pages I needed to affect with my attempts to get rid of the quick comment box were being altered, and then it... grew.

Well, I just edited the wiki's Perl script to generate div tags for several of the screens, so I'm gaining on you.

It's sort of like puttering in the garden, I suppose. Without the fresh air. I have to learn to apply this patience and attention to detail to things like cleaning the damn house.

Not saying! The screengrab in the comments above may or may not represent the actual editing I'm doing...

How do you get it to do that? I mean, how do you get the lj user tag to display something other than the actual username, but still link to that username?

Client-side editing. I have an ad-blocker running, and I've been adding some more whimsical filters, that are built to only affect the displayed part of the lj user tag-cluster instead of every instance of the name. It's deeeeply geeky.

BTW, the quick comment now allows you to choose your icon, so 90% of your reason to avoid it is now gone.
