Well. Off to SIGGRAPH. Three days in which, perhaps, I might get job nibbles. Or not. At the very least, it's something I haven't done before, and I'll see some funky high-end displays, lots of shorts, and... who knows.
I'm telling myself I'm not pinning any hope on something happening there work-wise, but honestly, I am. I don't want to move back to New Orleans if I can help it, but I don't feel like I have any other real option right now. If I had an on-and-off stream of freelance work, I might've sent my stuff to Boston to move in with Kin and Rik - but I continue to be resolutely anti-commercial with my art for some stupid self-defeating reason. I hope to get over that sometime soon and start chasing ever-pricier illustration gigs.
I'd love to scramble to re-target my stuff to San Francisco, or LA, or... Wherever. Maybe somewhere new. Somewhere urban and strange, where a job beckons strongly enough to pay for my relocation. Somewhere I can finally spread all my stuff out and pare it down; somewhere I'll get up each weekday and go to work doing something I'm actually kinda good at for a change...
I don't want to move back to New Orleans. I'm afraid I'll rot there. But I think I've changed enough that I won't. If nothing happens this week then I'll go down there and try to put myself back together, to figure out who I am and what I want.
If anyone out there happens to be working for a company that's going to SIGGRAPH with recruitment in mind, and thinks I'd fit in to what you need, let me know and I'll be sure to visit tomorrow or Wednesday.
