rumors induce paranoia

"an environment that will more resemble drawing/painting in Photoshop while maintaining all the vectors."
I just have these nightmare visions of them nuking the pen tool, or obscuring it, or changing it. There's a reason it's highlighted in the icon I used for this entry - it's the primary tool in AI for me. Or of them making the shapes work the way drawing in Flash does, which has all the disadvantages of working in vectors, without the precise control that's part of what I love about Illustrator.
I doubt they will. AI's history has been one of adding, not reworking. The pen tool's been there since the first release; it's a direct interface to the core of how things work. But still. "Drawing has been completely reworked". I shudder.
It could also mean 'expanded and optimized art brush engine', which I'd welcome (given that the superior art brush engine in Expression is most of what attracted me to it). Art brushes are fun, and I'd love it if they ran better, and let me control some things they don't at present.
I'll keep an eye out for news, and escaped betas...
Drawing in Illustrator CS 2.0 has also been completely reworked, yielding an environment that will more resemble drawing/painting in Photoshop while maintaining all the vectors. Also new will be a Vectorization tool that sources describe as an improved version of Streamline; a new Control Palette that mimics the Photoshop Options bar; and font/text improvements, including strike-through and underline of text.
Sources also say that preliminary work has started on Version 13 of Illustrator, code-named Jason. Details are slim, but Adobe is apparently exploring incorporating multiple artboards into Version 13.
