Using someone else's computer, when it has been lovingly customized away from the defaults, is like wearing someone else's dirty underwear. There's just this itchy feeling of wrongness at the back of your head.

When it's the default setup of a mostly-uncustomized installation, that's fine. But when there's all kinds of little programs adding this functionality or that... *shudder*

Oh, at my previous job, we had an official school system 'template" that no one was suppossed to mess with, but of course everyone and Joe's dog would customize their computers. This, of course, made MY job much harder, since I had to dig through the maze of stuff to fix anything. Only in Alabama (and maybe Mississippi), could a teach get away with setting a huge crucifix as her publically viewed wallpaper theme on a computer the children use.

I agree. I also wince whenever I first click on the "All programs" menu, and avoid looking at their bookmarks. I don't want to see something nasty. Not that I have a lot of friends who would do something truly nasty, but 99% of people view porn, and I really just don't want to know their tastes. :P

Just looking at what's scattreed on the desktop can be headachy, never mind delving into places you know are personal. I hate cluttered desktops... I really need to clean mine off, there's all of thirty-six files scattered in clumps across it! (then I see people's machines that have half the screen covered in icons half the size of the ones on mine... ugh.)

It's kinda nice having OS X... I can just create a username for the person and they can run the apps, but everything is nice and clean.

Because I have to admit, I've customized my Mac. The Finder icon is a red light that looks like Hal's, for instance. :)

Yeah, OSX is cool. This was a case where that sort of dancing around wasn't really an option, I just had to grit my teeth and deal with an environment optimized for someone very different from me...

My icons are all standard, but both my desktop image and the skin I use for Audion (iTunes is uuuugly) are my own art. I'm not interested enough in custom icons to draw a whole suite, and I wouldn't really want someone else's.

It took a long time to find icons that I thought were cool. Now I don't even remember how I changed them, but it's fine since I chose ones I could live with for a long time. :P
