Computer-controlled spray-paint. Watch the mpeg. It's insane. Also, notice that they're clearly using AI to control it. Whee!

Also: Hand printer. Or... the first version of a magic paintbrush. Wow. No actual movies, so I think this is early prototype stage, but this is just plain magical.

Both links off of bOingbOing.

That's awesome. it reminds me of Project Street Writer, which is a van that has a computer system that controls spray cans mounted underneath the van....and they write out messages on the actual street in the same kind of style, as they drive around. I think they have it set up so that the faster they go, the faster the paint is put down, so they can drive in normal traffic while painting and not have it messed up by...traffic flow and stuff. I have a video of it, it's pretty cool.

Being demonstrated by a hobbit in that first picture, evidently.

Wow, Peggy, I can just see your AI files being printed out wall size. That would be SO cool! I was actually more impressed when I saw the text than I was by watching the movie (it's slow). I couldn't help but giggle as someone mentioned 'graffiti' in the background as it made me feel that in some way, this was legitimizing graffiti to a section of the population. Damn nice lines, too. I'm still stuck on stencils. :"D

The hand printer seems really neat, too and has SO many applications. I wonder if it'll be eventually randomizable, in that you could actually 'paint' with it instead of just print out. In any case, very cool. Thanks for the links.

I couldn't make out most of the background chatter in the mpeg; I didn't try hard. After a while I just held down the fast forward button until it got to the part where it started painting the outlines. I love when it draws the two circles, then goes back and ever so perfectly goes around the outside of the outer circle to make the line thicker.

Thanks for posting the links, this is some neat stuff!

Some of the background chatter in the MPEG was in French,
so herewith a few translations:
"They're peanuts! If you stand closer, you can see the end of the peanut."
"It's so precise."
"There, I think this is going to be impressive. The finish... It's gonna be perfect."
"Oh, this is SICK!"
"It's too perfect."
"You could never do such a perfect circle by hand!"

Yeah, I think they were impressed...

The most insane tempo-shifting song I've ever heard, and still one of my favorites for screwing with my mind while I work on something. =^.^=

The Hand Printer is pretty cool. Slashdot has an article about it they ran last week.

Personally I want to find a version of the VersaLaser that works over large-areas like the spraycan one.

"These guys are still pulling back the foreskin of technology."

- some guy on Slashdot observing that it's several years off.

Still cool, though. And it's easy to imagine obvious enhancements: faster printing, color. And ways to use the technology beyond just printing out text. Carry one in my backpack with a bunch of infinite pattern-fills loaded into it and start doing stuff in my sketchbook using virtual zipatone.
