Jun. 26th, 2003 05:29 pmFor those of you who're watching this journal because I work aT *S*P*Ü*M*C*Ø*, and for anyone else who's interested - just in case you didn't already know this, tonight is the premiere of the new Ren and Stimpy.
Somewhere around 10pm, on TNN, or whatever they're calling themselves now. It's up to you if you want to watch the other two 'adult' shows they're doing; 'Gary the Rat' looks bad even if you judge it as a Flash show, and 'Stripperella'... this one must either be terrible, or way behind schedule, as they haven't shown anybody anything except for the opening titles. No clips from it, no tapes for critics, no nothing.
I won't go into details, but the first episode of R&S is probably the weakest. All the other ones are far more intense, in the same vein as 'Space Madness' or 'Stimpy's Invention'.

Date: 2003-06-26 06:21 pm (UTC)Meanwhile, I went to a book signing Tuesday, for the new book Jerry Beck wrote about the Spike & Mike animation festivals. Turns out that Spike is working on a package of material for Spike TV, and as a bonus, he's pondering lending his support to the countersuit against Spike Lee. He was Spike long before Lee was...

Date: 2003-06-26 07:43 pm (UTC)I was like, "ha-ha, I've been on a tour of Spumco!" and I had the instant admiration of my colleagues. (Well, okay, not really; they were just mildly amused.)
I will watch for your name in the credits.

Date: 2003-06-27 07:23 am (UTC)I'll be watching to see if it picks up in later episodes, but the general attitude on FM was that the first one was just gross, and totally lacked the 'whacky charm' that made the original season 1 so good.

Date: 2003-07-03 06:55 pm (UTC)I actually halfway enjoyed 'Gary the Rat,' although it's obviously a Flash animation, as you said... I could see it being something much better if somebody wanted to put the work into it.
I think 'Stripperella' was supposed to be some sort of amazing edgy thing, but to me it's just 'Super Friends' with giant tits. There are a hundred anime series that do this better and more explicitly. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I didn't have the urge to behead Pamela Anderson after the first few minutes of dialogue.
So 'Invader Zim' gets cancelled after two seasons, but they'll put this stuff on. Or run 'Rugrats' in perpetuity. Or there's Adult Swim, half of which is unwatchable. The first show in the lineup makes 'Dr. Katz' look kind of good. 'Harvey Birdman' is okay. 'Aqua Teen Hunger Force' is barely watchable; it's basically an Andy Merrill brain fart, and those have their merits, but I can't imagine running to see new episodes each week or whatever. Sealab was also 'Is anything going to happen? Are there any jokes or humor or anything?' Maybe I just need to watch it a few weeks to get into it, but I'm unsure I want to devote that kind of time and effort into making myself enjoy some shows.
