I don't know why, but fragments of the Soul Coughing song 'Blue Eyed Devil' have been rattling around my head on and off for the past month or so.

Spoon to the lighter to the lighter to the gun, devil lapsed out in a pool of sun. Spoon to the lighter to the lighter to the gun, devil lapsed out in a pool of sun...

That happens to me a lot with "Disseminated", but I can't figure out most of the words, so I usually end up singing loudly about plummeting monster trucks covered in chocodiles.

I don't think Soul Coughing's words were ever meant to really be figured out.

The Jupiter moon, I got disseminated! The Jupiter moon, I got disseminated! The Jupiter moon, I got disseminated! Well, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy! And ever since then, I got disseminated! And ever since then, I got disseminated! And ever since then, I got disseminated! Well, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy!

I think that 'Blue-Eyed Devil' is about a salesman out on the road getting high, and possibly killing himself. I don't think 'Disseminated' is about anything but how cool playing with words can be. And how cool Raymond Scott's beats were.

Call up bop and I'm bunting stomach, Koko mop I chop chunking plummet, Thud on top, I ate the chocodile.

Yeah, what's up with that?!? Heh. It's by far my favorite that I've heard by them so far though. Good glass-grinding music. Nothing goes with shards of glass in the eyeballs like Soul Coughing.

Could be worse.

Today's The Daily Bleat (blog from James Lileks) had the same problem with "Theme from Maude".

And last year, the PA system where I work had its Muzak tuned to an "Oldies" station. "Oldies" as in endless variations on "Pot Is Groovy!" and "Get Out Of Vietnam!" songs... (I was a kid in the Sixties. What was so Great about it?)
