Sketchbook from last night. Pretty strongly themed this time.


Both boyfriends said "Draw me a yiffy vixen, Peggy!" the other day. So I did. As always, these yiffy vixens are designed to be somewhat unpleasant.





The other day, Nick ran across his 'Xenofetish Tarot' idea again. We talked about it a little yesterday morning, too, so it was sort of hanging there in my head. I started riffing. It wound up being less 'fetish' and more just 'random Peggy'. Comments on a few at the end, instead of beneath each drawing as usual.

















I ran out of energy at this point, and couldn't think of anything for "Temperance", even after a little research.

The Empress and Emperor are looking away from each other, when the cards are in numerical order. But they're wearing masks on the sides of their heads, that look somewhat towards each other. The Heirophant, I've realized, probably needs to be scrapped and replaced by something that resonates similarly with the High Priestess.

"Strength" probably should've been a reuse of the putting-together-a-lion-taur image from last week's project. It'd be a more modernized and personal version of the imagery than 'riding a fiery space lion'.

The traditional image of the Hermit has always reminded me of Diogenes carrying his lantern around, looking for One Honest Man. So I went down that path. And made the Hermit a fool instead. She's walking out of the normal world into something stranger. (The Hermit quite possibly started as 'Time', according to some of the reading I've done.

The scales of "Justice" are represented by a sly nod to Egyptian myth: Anubis judges the dead by weighing their heart against a feather. And on the facing page, the Hanged Man became a kinky take on Odin hanging from Yggdrasil in his quest for Cosmic Wisdom. Needs actual raven reference for that to really work.

If I'd been able to come up with anything for "Temperance" I'd have probably done at least a couple more, but sitting there stuck for ideas on a theme I really don't sympathize with let me realize that I was getting sleepy, so I went to bed.

I don't know if I'll do more of these, or do anything with these sketches - I already have one big project right now, thank you.

I'm finding the way different sketchbooks affect what I do to be interesting. This one, a softbound 5x7 with completely unremarkable paper, but a textured, slightly fuzzy brown cover, seems to be for detailly pencil drawings. Everything in it so far - this stuff and most of the last batch of sketchbook scans - is fairly tight by my current standards. Maybe I'm just getting more detailly in my drawings as I age. Doing all the little bits of building and texturing and worldbuilding in Absinthe is probably a vector for this, too.

I tried to do a few more last night, leaving Temperance for later, and I realized that Death is about where my casual grasp of the imagery of the Tarot trumps runs out. Everything after it is pretty much a mess, packed with symbolism that really doesn't stick to my mind. It's where the imagery changes from roles and stages into Christian apocalypse.
