People have gone a long way with custom animations, and now that they have the 'sculpted' prims (sphere + a map of 3D offsets stored as r/g/b values of a texture) things are getting even better. When people can get through the longer toolchain for those. And there's a lot of tricks involving making degenerate sets of avatar sliders and folding limbs inside, too.
But yeah, you could go a lot further in SL if they had the coder time.
