Today I went out with Nick for tea. We sat there in Tealuxe chatting, and doodling - him in words, me in images. I mostly stuck with this spider-girl theme I've been doing all year so far, though I drifted into squid chicks, as well.

I actually drew this the night before last, in a break from working on the picture I posted. Who's Peter Elson? He was one of the artists whose work filled the pages of the "Terran Trade Authority" books, and Rik was having a moment of respect for his recent death. The pool of liquid is the stylized dazzle-paint he used on a lot of his spaceships.

She may have just emerged from a mind-twisting warpspace, but what really concerns her is the fact that her tea is spilling. Asteroid spiders have an interesting sense of what's important.

This one was one page, and then a spread that I hoped would work with it; I put 'em together in Photoshop after scanning. SLUTTY TENTACLE-MONSTER LUST.

Then when I came home I popped up a new document in AI and scribbed out an idea for some oblique fanart of [livejournal.com profile] kamenkyote's comic "Fite!" ([livejournal.com profile] fitecomics)...

Squid. I like squid. But I think I like cuttlefish more—they're so adorable!

Hey, I recognize the ones in that last sketch! I LOVE fan art! The sketches you've been doing lately have seemed more solid and more thought out than even before. Are the spider girls from DC? And of course, the more solid the sketches, the more stuff for your coffee table book!

*grin* Slinky menacing Skerry-girls! I had some thoughts of having them do something referencing the Fates, but it didn't survive to hit the canvas. Now to see if I can sit down and turn it into color. After all, I'm sure you'll have some blank pages to fill at the end of the second Fite! book...

The spider girls are very definitely not from DC - they're all science-fictiony weirdness, while DC is firmly a fantasy story. And yeah, I've been pushing myself on solidity lately; I'd taken a break from it for a while. I ought to just pull out the Preston Blair and practice the SOLID BASICS, but... lazy.

How did I not notice that the Skerry was a girl? :"D

Good ol' Preston Blair. His stuff has vaguely influenced mine as well. There are always those certain people that nearly everyone points to as a definite source, aren't there? The solidity shows and you work well with it. Coolness!

I like the way you draw faces...
They have fascinating expressions, especially in the fifth sketch from the top.

A lot of the time I can be found making the expression I'm busily drawing. Not because I'm looking in a mirror and using myself as reference; I just kinda do it without thinking. And the way all the muscles feel from the inside helps me get it right on paper...

I do exactly the same...Sometimes when i doodle at my work (at a steel-plate-production line!) I find myself doing strange faces - very embarrassing...It sort of comes naturally when one concentrates on a motif.
(God forbid that anyone would see me drawing at home when I know nobody is watching,..they would think I had gone raving mad...)
