AlmostVPN - a cute little ssh tunnelling app. More than a little oblique to set up, but I now have it running. I should now be able to send email through any connection, even ones (like our new ISP) that only want to let you send mail through their server. As a bonus it's encrypted. It can also do some super-sneaky stuff to be pretty much completely transparent to the programs using its connections, though I can't get that to work yet.

On the down side it needs to be stopped and started when I change networks; I'm not sure if this is something one switch away in its prefs, or something I'd have to remedy with complex scripting.

Further reference: fire a script upon network change. I might end up just working out the ssh commands myself and putting them in something like this. Or tell AlmostVPN to reset its tunnels...

Next-day addendum: Hmm, ssh tunnels don't want to last very long. I think I'm going to have to figure out how to make Mail run a script before email checking. This may involve writing a little plugin. Eek.

Also, a script to eliminate duplicate mail - haven't tried this; I might because I fucked up a little when migrating my mail from my own machine, and have some duplication.
list of Mail plugins - can one of these help me fire off scripts around a mailcheck?
