batbat final
Oct. 29th, 2003 08:28 pmI'm done with that drawing of
revar. Well. Painting, by now. I may work in Illustrator, and use lots of flat colors, but I don't really think 'drawing' covers this any more.

(bandwidth: Yerf)
(previous versions: here, here.)
I used a lot more transparency on this one than I normally do. The wings, most of the mist, the ribs inside the ear... some really weird stuff going on with opacity masks. I think it came out pretty nice; the only thing I see wrong with it right now is that I neglected to do the earrings that were in the original sketch. And I'm not about to go through the hassle of exporting three different resolutions and uploading to six different galleries again; all that transparency takes forever to render!
It's good to know that I can still summon and maintain the focus needed for an image like this. I was starting to worry that I'd lost that capability. I guess I haven't.

Date: 2003-10-29 09:15 pm (UTC)The transparency on the outline of the mist is excellent. Somehow blurry, yet crisp, but not. It makes me feel like I need to get my eyes checked.
Great color scheme as evar, much sepia creepia into your work lately. Noir?
Your Photoshop attempt oozes exasperation.
I've found myself losing patience with PS since I started on the infernally crisp path offered by Illustrator. But not as much as evinced by your PS image... not yet.

Date: 2003-10-29 11:29 pm (UTC)(actually, I'm pretty happy with the color scheme; I started partially with one out of a book, but I extended and built on it a lot instead of locking myself into it.)
For me, Photoshop is never the right tool for anything much beyond scanning. I need to remind myself of this. AI is no faster, but I'm not hating every minute of it!

Date: 2003-10-29 11:45 pm (UTC)I agree; while it's a pain to come up with clothing for a properly-winged bat (unless you punch grommets through the wings for straps, or something), it feels a lot better to me. It also helps that the character's explicitly described as having that sort of wing!
My favorite part of the wings is the way they work with the hand - the tendons probably wouldn't really want to bend that independently, but it's a nice break from the usual three fingers, thumb, one long finger thing that everyone's tended to do since, well, Zjonni's illos for the story Revar first appeared in. *smirk*
Yeah, she's a vampire bat, hence the fangs and the blood-red theme of the background and the drained corpse underfoot.

Date: 2003-10-30 02:16 am (UTC)He didn't specify the number of wing-fingers, though, which has lead to a variety of interpretations. I have pictures with Revar with 1+3+thumb, 1+4+thumb, 3+2+thumb, 3+3+thumb, and even 1+2+thumb configurations. :) I have to say this is the first one I've seen with alternating normal and wing-fingers though!
Zjonni says that he chose to have just one wing-finger, as he felt it was more attractive. Watts has mentioned that he felt there would have to be more, but he wouldn't be pinned down on how many. The general gist of the discussion seemed to be that Revar probably had more than the standard five digits.
My personal take on it was that she likely has six digits on each hand, with the end three being reversed, wrist-joint attached wing-fingers, leaving two regular fingers and a thumb.
Discussions with Watts about how Revar wears clothes seemed to suggest that she has piercings in the wing membrane along her side, allowing straps for bikini type tops, when she isn't wearing halter tops. Though to be honest, I can't quite see how she'd be able to tie the straps in back, with how the wing membrane would constrain arm movement. (I think!)
One of the interesting things about playing Revar is that I'm not the character's final authority! Yet Watts is vague enough about the specifics, that I have pretty loose guidelines within which to stay. Generally, I just gloss over the details, and keep it vague. The issue doesn't come up much, anyhow.
In any case, this is a wonderful picture of Revar, and is the first one I have of her "on the prowl". Thank you Peggy and Tug!

Date: 2003-10-30 08:48 am (UTC)She also must really appreciate having someone else handy to scrub her back when bathing. *grin*
(That experiment also gave me the beginnings of a sense of what her gestures must be like. Ultra elegant and pre-planned, because those long, long wing fingers have to be accomodated.)
I've seen various finger configurations on bats, but alternating manipulative and wing fingers are my own impulsive twist. I don't think the biomechanics would quite work, but looked neat... I feel weird drawing extra fingers on a hand.
Glad you like it! I was pretty happy with how it turned out myself.

Date: 2003-10-30 09:29 am (UTC)I owed Tug for a few things (like taking me to Burning Man!), including a commission of him that's been stalled longer than I want to admit, but normally... let's just say you don't get this for twenty bucks at a con table!

Date: 2003-10-30 09:13 am (UTC)Four overlaid round-cap dashed lines to make the chain of beads and their highlights; the dangling ovoids are scatter brushes with no real scatter, so I get the ovoid repeated along the line. It originally dangled straight, but they completely obscured the subtle suggestion of form I did for the cleavage, so I used them to help suggest the form, implying that they were lying atop the curves a little exaggeratedly. Which also meant a little overlap, so you could see that they were transparent...
Or do you just mean that the necklace is an eminently covetable piece of jewelry? I know I sure want one like that!
(Pardon me suddenly sticking your face in bat cleavage, dear. *grin*)
