Yesterday at work I went out to lunch with people. This is a rare event. We drove to a place that was only about six or seven blocks away. On the way back I noticed a shop that sold scooters. I took note of where it was in relation to the subway stop and Spümcø. Because I'm really tired of the bus.

Today I went and took a look, diverting myself from the usual direct walk from the subway stop to work. And got some sticker shock; new and used ones there were averaging $2300 or so. This shop throws in a helmet for free, too. This is unfortunately out of my price range. Blah. If I had a credit card I'd be seriously considering it, but I don't, and I don't really want one.

I need to stop wasting so much money on video games.

You can get cheaper scooters on e-bay for better prices: $600-$700. A friend of mine is going to be purchasing one soon, since he can't stand the bus and walking anywhere in Phoenix's 112 degree weather is a little...dangerous. It sounds like a really good deal since you don't need to pay insurance, don't need a special license, and they can get up to 60-80 something MPG, at a top speed of 40 miles per hour....

Just a little, yeah, I can imagine that you'd go through a liter of water every other block.

I believe that in LA, you need to get a motorcycle license if you ride a scooter... I'm just doing some spur-of-the-moment research; I suspect I'm probably going to end up with something used.

Be careful. I'm not sure how CA views scooters with respect to licenses. It may be that something over a certain power requires a motorcycle license, so you better check on that. If it's the case, you might want to go with a motorcycle anyway... my old man rode both, and found the scooter went fast enough to do him harm, not fast enough to avoid harm, and had a small wheelbase that made wipeouts likely if he was forced to go over something unexpectedly uneven in the road. Then again, every motorcyclist I know has sustained significant injury at some point, so take that with a grain of salt.

I do know you can also get good bikes on the cheap. Tugrik'd be the man to ask about anything bikey.

By this point, I think living in LA and not having a car may have become a political stance of some sort for me. I just don't want to have a multi-ton iron parasite in my life; I never really have.

*nod* I believe that CA just plain requires a motorcycle license. Even for attaching a little motor to your bicycle.

I just can't see myself on a motorcycle somehow. It just wouldn't look right.

Hee! That sounds like an idea for a Peggy character image. Think cute dragon on a moped, with big helmet and grin would be cute.

Peggy's cute like [livejournal.com profile] nezumimouse!

Stay under 250cc and you're fine. It's at the 250cc level (such as the Honda Helix or Reflex) that you start needing a motorcycle license.

You could, for example, nab a nifty little Metropolitan or Ruckus and all you'd have to do is make sure you bought a helmet.

If you really want a motorcycle license, just holler. I'd be glad to help you through the process.

You sure about the 250cc limit, Tug?
When I got my Honda Elite 250 (which actually had a 210cc engine),
I had to get a motorcycle license. I took the tests and everything.
But I didn't get a separate license, they just added an M to my normal license.

As for the scooter sticker shock, yeah, them suckers are certainly a lot
pricier than when I got mine. And the Vespas are pretty pricey too!

No kidding.

You mean you're actually paying for games, Peggy?!?

Whatever happened to "Evil Queen"?

Well, now that I know people who make them, it feels different. Even if none of them have worked on a single game I want.

Also, I don't have a DVD burner.
