Slowly, I continue to experiment with and codify theories of film noir-flavored composition. Soon I may even be at the point where I can write some of them down.
Watching Dark City the other night, I think you had an excellent point about the deadened, washed out, matte colors. We also noticed it was a limited palette. Yellow light, with red accents (neon, vamp dresses, bikinis). Any blue was dark, such as cop uniforms. Okay, except for the bathhouse scene. Even the blacks were grayed. It was rare to see a true black, and mostly they were down in the science fiction underbelly of Dark City. There really wasn't noticable green until the very end, which reminded me of Bladerunner.
