In a couple of weeks Nick and I will be in Seattle looking for apartments. And I just realized that I haven't been involved in that since, oh, 2001.

This should be... interesting. I have a few ideas of what I want and how to look, but I just know there's something I'm not thinking of!

I take it, you'll be meeting up with Jessie and Kristy. They're sure to know the territory and current conditions at least.

Kristy knows all the best chokepoints and sniper spots, and I've been monitoring the locals' behaviour patterns.

That reminds me of something. Were you guys making plans to buy the old Hojo Motel on Aurora Way as some sort of compound? I remember Kristy writing something along those lines, but the details escape me now. That would've ruled.

one resource you might look at

Any particular neighborhoods you're looking at?

Probably, but I'm not sure which ones. "Not in the goddamn exurbs" is the short form. *grin*

apartment shopping

Maintenance - 24hr service? if in a large building how big is the maintenance staff and is there an onsite manager.

How often is the office open?

Where do packages get sent?

Windows! New? Drafty?

Laundry facilities - on site? cost? how new are the machines?

If necessary, can you walk to a grocery store (even a corner market)? Is there reliable public transportation convenient? Even if you never use the bus/train/subway, alternate means of transportation are always good.

Pet Policy: even if you don't have/want pets if the owners allow dogs there might be barking problems.

I realize these are more practical then some of the other posts. But I have apartment shopped every few years for the last 2 decades. I have found these issues to be important to the quality of life in the apartment. Dagoski can tell you some of the nifty places we have lived in where these things came up. The amazing disappearing office staff at Fairmount Terrace made getting things fixed and packages delivered something like he!! Plus, having all of your heat go straight out the window does nifty things to your electricity bill. I think my cat still sleeps under the covers because as a kitten the apartment was so cold I made her sleep with me under the quilt so she wouldn't freeze.

Good luck! Maybe some day Dagoski and I will move out to Seattle.

Mrs. Dagoski

Awesome - that's exactly the kind of thing I knew I wasn't thinking about off-hand. We are intimately familiar with the joys of shitty insulation and single-glass windows; that's why half of the past four years in Boston has seen me completely useless because I shut down when it's too cold and we can't really afford to heat the damn place. Some of the others, though, are not at all things I'd have thought of!

Would you please tell us what you want to find? I'm curious what sort of lair would be ideal for your family.

Seriously

There's an honest-to-gawd castle not far from where I live (an hour or so north of Seattle), complete with its own waterfall and hydroelectric system.

It's probably out of your price range, however.

Maybe for just us, but… maybe not for the collective we're getting together. Especially if it's still on the market when we're looking for a place for us all in a year or so.

although 'an hour north of Seattle' probably disqualifies it on the basis of location; those of us who don't drive would be kinda… stuck there.

But we'd be stuck in a CASTLE! :D
